I drew Kept Woman for my humanities class in high school. Looking back, Im very surprised that I didnt get in trouble for turning in a drawing of a nude woman, but I guess times were different then. It was also in keeping with the spirit of the assignment, as we were asked to draw something in the style of Greek sculptures from the early Common Era. I used many examples of statues and sketches to get a feel for the proportions. I also based the stance on a picture of a statue, per the assignment. The statue seemed to be yearning for something, maybe its freedom from maintaining a pose for thousands of years. Initially, I only had the figure in the drawing. I added the bed, the askew walls and floor, and the barred window after the assignment had been graded. With that, Kept Woman was born.

On the back of Kept Woman, I included a poem as a caption for the sketch.

Yearnings of a Kept Woman

Her eyes are never closed
     always reaching
     for something more.

And what shes seeing there
     within sleeping
     dreams, always bright

These dreams she follows far
     away beyond
     my cold hard touch.
