The inspiration for Binary Life was drawn from several sources. Those elements dealing with the dehumanizing effects of technology stem directly from my recent job stress. Software engineering can sometimes feel like a sterile occupation, with no emotionally expressive or creative outlet within the work. Add to that the culture of corporate America (where complimenting someone could get me fired) and the prospect of being trapped within this world for the next four decades, and panic sets in quite easily. Those elements having to do with isolation from people stem largely from my first year out of college, when I was living alone in Seattle and knew only one other person in the entire region. Finally, those elements addressing online addiction are gathered from my observations of the sometimes obsessive behavior of my friends and family.

When I was writing these lyrics, I principally had No Doubts Excuse Me Mr. and Queensrches Suite Sister Mary running through my head, influencing the arrangement of the words into the mood and beat I wanted. The lyrics are a bit of a downer, so I envision this being arranged very up tempo, with a ska beat (emphasis on the afterbeat instead of the downbeat) and heavy bass. It could be a little angry, but the desperation in the lyrics cant be echoed in the mood of the music or the song would become emo. Thats not what Im going for.

Binary Life

[VERSE 1:]

Start the day when the alarm bell rings
Like yesterday just rush around
No time for breakfast youll be late for sure
Its only eating, whats that good for?
Get your clothes on then get out the door
Foot on the gas youre on your way
Once at the office youll have work to do
A thousand e-mails to just read through
Jack yourself into the silicon world
One more brain cell for the goal
Pour your soul into the deep abyss
Holding back the fear: theres nothing more

[CHORUS:]

Still your lead your binary life
Devoid of feeling yet full of strife
IM your lover just to say goodnight
Is this living? Is this giving?
Making new friends at the speed of light
But are they really what they say they are?
Scanned in photos can be full of lies
Do you know them? Should you show them
Who you really are?
Who you really are?

[VERSE 2:]

Drive yourself home through the crowded streets
Its stop and go, just stop and go
Just one small speck among hundreds more
Youre anonymous, yeah youre there all alone
Open the door to your empty cell
Like youve done evry night before
No one to talk to outside your head
Its impossible to live on this way
Automaton well thats all you are
Just circuitry flowing through your veins
Logon to chat rooms just to pass the night
Afraid to fall asleep, afraid to dream

[CHORUS]

[BRIDGE:]

Theres six billion people on this planet they say
But do you know your neighbors name?
You burn your bridges and build your fortress-like walls
Work so hard to push the world away
You look around to see that nobodys near you
And wonder why youre all alone
Your whole life is wasted by you biding your time
Just waiting for your day to come
When all your wishes and all your dreams will be real
Youre dehumanized more evry day
Maybe someday you will think this all over
And wonder why youre all alone
But online adventure makes you feel in control
Nobody will know who you are
An idealized version of what youd like to be
An avatar for the world to see
Addicted now to a lifestyle of fantasy
You wonder why youre all alone

[CHORUS]

Do you even know
Who you really are?
